hair loss prevention

Losing hair is neither a rare nor a dangerous problem. Every adult individual loses roughly 100 hairs everyday on an average. Age can be a factor behind hair loss. Levels of testosterone and genetic factors are also responsible for thinning hairline and baldness. Male pattern baldness, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in men.

What is natural hair loss?
Human scalp has about 100,000 hairs and some 100 of them come off everyday. This is natural because the growth cycle of a single strand of hair is about 4-5 years, after which it falls off and a new strand replaces it. During the entire cycle, each hair strand grows by half an inch every month. So the next time you see a stray hair on your comb, you can assume that it came to the end of its growth cycle and fell off naturally.

What causes hair loss?
Hair loss can be caused by several factors, including after effects of some disease, hormonal changes, cancer treatment, stress, genetic or hereditary factors, and lack of hair care. The habit of hair pulling may also trigger patchy hair loss. Scratching the scalp can also cause hairs to come off prematurely. Wearing a tight cap or hat can also result in this condition. All these causes usually lead to random hair loss. Losing hair in a specific pattern can be linked to male pattern baldness.

How can I stop my hair from falling off?
If you are losing hair because of fever, radiation therapy or after effects of medication, there is nothing to worry about. Your hair is likely to regrow once you recover from the illness or when the therapy is over. You can try using wigs or put on a fancy hat as a cosmetic cover-up in the mean time.

But if you are balding because of genetic or hormonal factors, you can try finasteride. This is a oral prescription-only medicine recommended for male pattern baldness. Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, finasteride is proven effective in most men with genetic sensitivity to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). For some men, it can even trigger hair regrowth.

When should I start thinking about treatment for hair loss?
This is a tricky proposition to deal with. Because hair tends to fall off naturally for most men and women, it is sometimes difficult to determine the actual causes before it is too late. But there are certain tell-tale signs that can alert you to the possible danger of hair loss. You should talk to your doctor if:

You are losing hair in large numbers, especially during your teens or twenties
Your hair loss is irregular
Your hair loss is accompanied by an itching sensation
The skin under the affected area is red or scaly

Can I prevent hair loss?
Some small adjustments to your lifestyle can slow down hair loss considerably. Using unsafe and poorly blended shampoo or any other hair care product weakens your hair follicles. Using blow dryers too often is not at all a good idea if you want to preserve your hairline. Try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible. Give yourself time to relax and engage in activities you like.
